Our mission

Helping everyone speak the language of data and AI

Data and AI are reshaping every industry, but the literacy needed to participate has lagged. We build training that gives people of every role — not just data teams — the confidence to read, work with, and communicate with data and AI.

Why we built this

For the last decade, the data-literacy gap has been treated like a technical training problem. Buy a tool, ship a one-day workshop, hope it sticks. It almost never does. People walk away having seen a chart type for the first time and forget it by Friday.

The reason is that literacy isn't a feature checklist — it's a way of thinking. It develops through practice, questions, and feedback. That's what coaching is, and until now coaching was expensive, scarce, and unscalable.

AI changed that. A well-designed AI coach can answer the question a learner is actually asking, in language they understand, anchored to the exact lesson they're working through. So we built a course platform where every lesson has a tutor, every learner has a coach, and the curriculum is taught by working practitioners.

Meet the founder

Ben Jones, founder of Data Literacy

Ben Jones

Founder & Head Instructor

Ben spent six years at Tableau Software, where he led the team that built free public learning resources used by millions of practitioners. He is a Lecturer at the University of Washington Foster School of Business and the founder of the nonprofit Data Literacy.

He is the author of two books on data communication: Avoiding Data Pitfalls (Wiley) and Communicating Data With Tableau (O'Reilly). His work has been cited in the Wall Street Journal, the BBC, and used in classrooms and data-storytelling teams around the world.

Ben built Data Literacy after watching companies spend millions on tools while the people meant to use them were left without a real path to fluency. The platform is the shape of training he wishes had existed for the teams he taught.

What we believe

Practice over passive watching

Lessons end with quizzes, prompts, and reflections — not just a video and a checkbox.

Frameworks that travel

WISDOM, IMPACT, the 21 Key Traits — repeatable, tool-agnostic models that work in any environment.

Taught by practitioners

Every course is taught by someone who has done the work, not just studied it.
